Amanda is a French songwriter, singer, actress, painter, tv presenter, and former model. She started her professional modeling career in the mid-1960s. She modeled for Ossie Clark and Paco Rabanne among others.
Lear met with Salvador Dali, a Spanish surrealist painter, and maintained a close relationship for the next 15 years.

Amanda made her public appearance as the model for Roxy Music’s album “For Your Pleasure” in 1973. She was signed into Ariola Records and sold millions of dollars worth of albums mostly in Continental Europe and Scandinavia.

Her first four albums amassed her great popularity, they were listed among the top 10 of European Charts. Some of her big hit albums are: “Sweet Revenge (1978), Blood and Honey, Tomorrow, Follow Me, Enigma, Fashion Pack, Follow Me, Queen of Chinatown, and The Sphinx”.

Amanda Lear’s Gender Identity

Since the beginning of Amanda’s singing and modeling career, there have been claims that she was a drag queen or intersex.

According to Wikipedia, Salvador Dali himself and others who knew Lear in her early life allegedly commented on her transgender background.

A transgender entertainer and model, April Ashely claimed that in the 1950s and early 1960s, Lear, whose name she gave as Alain Tap, and herself worked together in the Parisian transvestite revues Madame Arthur and Le Carrousel.

Ashley pointed out in her book “April Ashley’s Odyssey” that she remembers Lear performing drag acts under the stage name “Peki d’Oslo”

Romy Haag, a transgender living in Germany also reported similar facts as Ashley.

Amanda herself however denied all these allegations since the beginning of her singing career in 1976, saying that it was “a crazy idea from some journalist”. She further claimed that it was Salvator Dali or even herself that started the rumor.
